job prayer request

I am hoping that you are reading this often and that I am not boring you. I would like to ask you to pray for me concerning the whole job thing. I have really enjoyed the couple of times I have worked at Kate's Paperie, but I am just not too sure that is what I want to do the whole time I am here. I have sent my resume out to alot of families in search of something right along the lines of what I would like to be doing, but have not gotten any calls or emails back. I guess I am just trying to decide what I am going to be doing since I have this job, but I don't want to get stuck in a rut. I also don't want to tell them I want to work full time, and then get an opportunity and have to quit completely. I also know I am not obligated to them in anyway, but I do want to be true to my word. Anyway, just pray that I would have discernment in knowing where I should be looking for jobs, and also that I would be active in doing so. And pray big that God would open an amazing door to a job with a great family, that I could assist in their daily lives. The jobs are out there, it is not as bazaar as one might think. Now I just have to get connected to get a job with them. Ok that is all. Thanks for praying.

stoop sale...

So i got this cute rocking chair at a stoop sale. i saw it as i was walking and talking and late, so i asked for the lady's phone number to call her about it and so i called and she hadn't sold it so i went to look at it and brought it home! fun. so we have one chair to sit in. and i was told that it was very "new yorker" to buy something from a stoop sale. so there you go its official. i am a new yorker....ha. no way.

Q and A

so i have gotten a couple very good questions that i want to address to the masses since i am sure those posing the questions are not the only ones thinking these things...
q:what churches have i gone to?
a: i have thus far gone to 3 churches and they are; Redeemer Presbyterian which is a well known author/ pastor's church Tim Keller. very good teaching, but very very traditional. Morning Star New York (MSNY) it is affiliated with the EveryNation organization of churches. I am not familiar with this, so if you know anything about that please I would be very grateful for input. And Apostles which is a church plant from Lake Point Baptist in Rockwall, this is the church my friend Chelsea goes to and that I would say I liked the most, but I am not committing to it at this point.

q:what does the title of my blog mean?
a: very good question, submitted by my dear auntie. i must admit that most of my musical knowledge and taste can be attributed to my brothers musical collection. one of the groups i picked up on from him is the Beastie Boys. I know some might be shocked by this, but it is true that during a sculpture class at UNT my favorite "get to work" music was the beastie boys because of thier loud fun rock rap and crazy lyrics. so anyway as i was flying to new york i thought it would be appropriate to listen to some song concerning new york, however i couldn't seem to find anything in my ipod that related....except this particular song no sleep til brooklyn by the beastie boys. which was all that much more appropriate since that is where i am living! so that is the story behind the title.

q: how much will you be working at Kate's Paperie?
a: this is yet to be determined, because i am waiting to see if anything else comes my way. I am working between 15- 20 hours these next two weeks while i am babysitting for susan so I am not overloaded, but after that there is the possibility that i might just love it so much that i will bump my hours up to full time. and yes that is an option they left open to me.

q: how was the first day?
a: well i really enjoyed the first day, but lets be honest the first day of most things is good. So i did LOVE being in the store, but how could I not it is basically what my heaven on earth would look like. so it was fun and i was able to help two customers and be creative in giving them ideas, so that was good. they also thought of a great little task for me to get me better acquainted with the paper by the sheet. they have these books full of paper samples and then they store the actual paper in flat files below, and they want me to go through and affirm that the system is correct and absolutely perfect. that way they know it is organized well, and i get to stare and beautiful paper all day and organize it. i mean really the only way this could be better is if all of my friends worked there with me. ya now that would be the life. of course then there is the possibility that those friends wouldn't have the same appreciation for the product and then i would get annoyed. so now we will just hope and pray that i would make some great friends who already work there and love paper! anyway the first day was really great. please continue to pray that the lord would be directing me and showing me if this is really where he wants me to stay. i mean it is retail people. on that level i dont know if it is how all my dreams will come true. :)

ok well we have our first house guest in this week. it is a friend of nikki's. so we cleaned up the apt last night and blew up another air mattress for her. nothing like a little southern hospitality up here right.

churchie day

I have tried to avoid days like yesterday most of my life. That is, sundays where you spend the whole day at church or doing churchie things all day. well yesterday my churching started at 2 and didn't end until about 9pm. and all it was was one bible study and then two church services. both churches had no air conditioning. i felt like i was in another time period fanning myself with the bulletin. anyway it was good.

it is troubling to make these decisions, so if you want to know something to pray for this is one of them. there are alot of people up here with different backgrounds of church, different expectations, needs, ideas about sermons or worship or community. there are so many aspects. so i am just trying to find the right fit. i would like to say that i think i decided, but i won't speak too soon.

also i haven't really ever had to go serious church shopping. i mean a good solid church has always been right in front of my face saying "come here you will like it, it is good, don't worry about a thing" ie, denton bible, watermark, well and then there is Reinhardt which i didnt have much option there, but i cant complain there either. so there you have it this isnt really a predicament it is just the issue i knew i would face when coming here.

Brooklyn Children's Museum

i found out that the brooklyn children's museum is one block from my house. i am going to get a job there. it may be volunteer, but i can't pass this opportunity up. they are under construction for renovations, but reopen on september 20th. that is the same day our beds come! just thought i would let you know.

oh and by the way. i got a little part time job at Kate's Paperie. It is an amazing paper store in NYC. I will be working on the upper east side. It is just a fun job and I start on Tuesday. prayers answered

Ok so i also just wanted to let y'all know how your prayers are being answered. The Lord is providing for me. We thought that when we got here we would have to put down first and last months rent in addition to the deposit we put down in july. Well, we were delightfully surprised to find out that we only had to pay this month! AND since we started on the 13th of August they are going to prorate our september rent. Why they didn't pay attention and do that now I don't know, but that will be a nice little treat that will help out immensely.

Also, my friend Susan Harrell Keith who lives in Manhattan needs a babysitter for a couple weeks, because hers is out of town. I have babysat for these cute little ones in Dallas, and I am excited to be able to be here to babysit them too! So that will be some extra cash right now until I get a set job.

Also, my resume is being sent out to families who need some help keeping their lives organized and scheduled. So hopefully over the next couple of weeks I will be getting interviews and opportunities through that. Please pray.

Right now I am going to put in my application at Kate's Paperie on the Upper East Side.

first two days

Well, here we are. Here I am. Sitting in an apartment on New York Avenue in Brooklyn New York. Would you have ever placed me here? I mean I know some of you think "oh, Sally, you are perfect for NY the way you talk on your phone..." But let me tell you there is alot more to NYC than busy people talking on their phone. I don't know how to put it into words quite yet, but hopefully each time I write will be an opportunity for you to take a glimpse into my world here. So in the hustle and bustle of the big city it is almost 7 on Friday evening and we are having a quiet break from the running around we have been doing the last couple of days. First off let me introduce you to some of the people I am surrounded by.

Meet Nikki Foster she is my dear friend who I lived with in Denton in 04-05 school year. Then at the end of that summer back in 2005 she moved to Lubbock TX. Now we are back together again in NYC. It is her crazy idea and dream that got me to even think about coming here. She and I prayed many nights over the phone asking the Lord to lead us individually where He wanted us, in hopes that He would direct us here. So pretty much I am able to blame most of this all on her. :) We will be sharing an ENOURMOUS room.

Meet Dana Tanamachi well she is an artist. She is a graphic designer, and I have known her for a few years in Denton, but I am excited about getting to know her better and be challenged by her, because I always hear amazing things about her. Now I get to really know her!

Meet Kelsey Foster She is a photographer here in NYC. She lives in the apartment building next door. It is really fun to have these girls right next door. Especially since our apartment is not fully furnished with the amenities these girls came with. I also know Kelsey from Denton from friends of friends of friends and denton bible.

Meet Amanda Simkins Who knew an old time Reinhardt connection would pop back into my life and be living next door. Amanda moved here with Kelsey about 2 months ago and we have had fun talking about people we know and how things are with our families and intertwined friends. Another familiar face that makes all this so much easier.

So now you know my roommates and neighbors who I am sure I will be talking alot about since we spend all of our time together, thus far at least. So now I can give you a little more info on what has been going on.

Well all my travels were simple and straight forward. Amanda met Nikki and me and we lugged our large bags into their apt and then walked next door to sign the lease. Right as we walked out the door our building manager Simon was there to meet us. We looked at the apt and it was all that we imagined it to be. It is simply amazing. It is huge and clean and has a new kitchen and new bathroom, wood floors, and big windows, and there is plenty of room for all of you to come stay. So we signed on the dotted line. I will admit this was rather unnerving. I didn't really have alot to say, because getting here and taking it all in was overwhelming enough not to mention the fact that as soon as i stepped foot into brooklyn I was committing to stay for an entire year. WOW. I still don't know how this is going to work, but I guess if I knew there would be no point in being here. So we did that, then we went to eat in Chelsea with some friends who were in town.

Then Day ONE: I had an interview and i spilled coffee on my freshly dry cleaned shirt right before i got there. I hope this is not surprising to any of you. As soon as it happened I was thankful for the shirt I had planned on wearing with a sweater so i just ended up buttoning the top button and all was well. Then everything with the interview was great, and they are looking for a position for me to be a "nanny" for a family with kids no younger than 7. Then Nikki and I went to Target and bought some necessities so we could somewhat function in our humble abode. We came home and sat down for a few minutes then ventured out with Amanda to IKEA to buy some blinds for our apt. Oh IKEA. Over all a good day. I would say we spent most of our time in transit.

Day TWO: We slept in. We didn't go out til about 3pm. Then we went across the street and got library cards so we can use the internet! Yeah. Then we rode the bus to Home Depot. Now we are here doing not much of anything. It is nice.
